How to Prepare Your Children for an Emergency at School
Anybody can be affected by disaster at any time, from anywhere in the world. This lesson seems to be being repeated more often these days.It doesn't matter if it's a natural catastrophe, a terrorist attack, mass shooting, or a nuclear threat, more people are realizing the importance of being prepared for any potential dangers in this volatile world.
Make sure you have an emergency survival kit for each of your children
My school keeps its own First Aid and emergency supplies kits on-site. However, we ask parents to bring a Ziplock-sized emergency kit for each child. These are kept together in the classroom emergency kit. Parents are asked to include a snack, a juicebox, a game, and a letter to their child in each kit. This kit is intended to comfort children in an emergency.
Learn Your School's Emergency Protocols
In the event of an emergency, all schools follow a certain protocol. Learn more. If they have to evacuate, where do students and teachers go? What are the drills they teach? What protocol is used for various emergency situations (e.g. fire, earthquake, flood, shooting, etc.)? What is the best way for parents to contact their children/make contact in an emergency situation? What emergency supplies are kept in the school's stock? What training has the staff received in First Aid?
Make Your School's Information Easy
You should know your school's protocol and have all the information you need in case of an emergency. What is the office telephone number? What is the address? What is the name of the principal, teachers and secretary?
Know your children's school schedules. When does school start and end? Talk to your children about possible emergency scenarios
Enroll your children in a First Aid Course
I recommend that you enroll your children in a First Aid class if you want to teach them how to help each other and take care of yourself in an emergency.
Some schools offer First Aid classes as part of Phys Ed. at a certain age. Even if they get the training in school, it doesn't hurt to enroll them in a private program. Making your child aware about what to do in case of an emergency is very important. It would make your child aware and would prompt him or her to act in a more cautious and faster way when any emergency strikes.
Conclusion
Self-reliance and emergency preparedness are key components. You must be able to provide for your own needs in every situation. Don't rely on others. Although school staff is responsible for your children while they attend school, there are always unexpected events that may make it impossible to reach them in an emergency. It may take your child a while to receive help if there are many injuries. If you follow all these protocols and make your child aware about these steps, your ward would be fully prepared for any kind of emergency situation that can arise in school.
